Sorry about the brief site downtime. I went away for a week and the server was moved without my knowing, and all the files were lost. But we're back up now, so enjoy!

Welcome to the August update! Not huge - just some general stuff. Enjoy it, though.

Elrhan's Promotion - The maintainer of one of the most extensive Pern sites on the net was recently elected by his peers (myself included) to walk the tables and become a Master Archivist. Congratulations!

NB: Due to the site move, the pernquote.js script (for Random Pern Quotes) has moved to http://pern.kempe.net/pernquote.js. Please update your pages!

7 March 2000
I've gone yet another step up in the world - pern.kempe.net site now sits on a proper web server, so there's no redirection! Please update your links to pern.kempe.net as the users.iafrica.com site will be disappearing soon.

5 February 2000
Welcome to the New Year and the first update. Yes, it's been a long time since the last one but I've had exams, been overseas etc. and life was a touch busy! Anyway, it's a larger update than usual, so enjoy it! Also take a look at the new FAQ.

Here's looking forward to a good new year, and we should have quite a lot to look forward to as Pern fans: the TV show starts shooting sometime this year and Grolier's Pern Game should be available soon, too!

Have a good one! -- Greg

You can now access the page a lot more easily by going to http://pern.kempe.net/. It redirects to users.iafrica.com, but update your bookmarks, please, because I can't say when it'll move somewhere completely different :)

There's also a new email address for the page: pern@kempe.net.

I've updated some of the Javascript code, so the link buttons in the left frame will now work with Netscape 4 and up (as well as Explorer 4 and up, which they always worked for.)

With this update, we've officially reached 220 items in the list! Thanks to all of you who have contributed and made this site what it is today.

I've been tossing around the idea of adding a Guestbook page where people could post their own insights and comments about the page. It would make the site a little more interactive: what do you think?

Happy April Fool's Day, everyone, and a very happy birthday to this site's inspiration, Anne McCaffrey!

28 February 1999
Thank you to Gerard Rousselle for pointing out that Venus is the morning star, and not Mercury as was implied in one of the items in the list.

Happy St Valentine's day, for starters.

Firstly, the Random Pern Quotations script has been modified to allow more flexibility. You can now also get a random quotation by calling a javascript function. Take a look at the page for more details.

Secondly, the previous "Restore Frames" links that appeared on any pages that weren't part of the correct frames, have been removed. They've been replaced by a more efficient piece of code that simply restores the frames and returns you to the page. Quite neat, actually :) The main page also detects if it is in someone elses frames and then reloads itself correctly.

Thirdly, the new links section has been added.

Complete update again - graphics as well as content. I apologise to everyone for the delay and actually had a number of emails asking when I was going to update everything.

I hope you enjoy the new page (I think it looks a lot better.) You'll need a browser that supports Javascript and cascading style sheets for the best effect.

The Random Pern Quotations script now also includes a few items from the miscellaneous section.

I'm working on a links page, so keep checking back here for info on that.

Okay, so I got my prediction a bit wrong :P I've been away a lot recently so I haven't had time to update much of the page, except for a few things here and there. Hopefully I'll have a full update on 1 February.

A note has been added to the Random Pern Quotes page that the quotes will only work if the browsing loading the page has Netscape 3.0 or later, or MSIE 4.0 or later.

20 October 1998
This is a general announcement that any new additions to the page are now going to be added on the first day of every month, so check back then! Well as from December, any way :) New stuff has been added!

The Random Pern Quotes script has been updated to include a few of the recently added items.

7 October 1998
The site has been accepted as part of the Pern Web Ring. The appropriate links have been added to the main page.

23 September 1998
Another monthly update: 7 new items have been added to the list, the details of which can be found on the actual page.

I haven't had any comments on the new layout of the site (neither good nor bad) so I presume that it isn't completely terrible :) Feel free to email me with comments!

Woah! Somewhat of a major change here! :) Yup, I've redone the site completely. Everything has been split up into separate pages, and a News section has been added. If your browser can't support frames, bummer - it's almost the end of the century and about time you got with the program and got yourself one that does!

If you've found yourself stranded here either stuck in someone else's frame, or without the navigation bar, click here to fix it. A small mug of JavaScript will add a link at the bottom of any page to fix the frames if it detects something is wrong with them.

As always, feel free to email me to tell me if you like it, despise it etc. Suggestions are welcome :)

Yours, Greg Kempe

This is official notification of the new Random Pern Quotes section that has been added. Basically, it details the use of a tiny piece of JavaScript (that anyone can include in a page) that will return a random item from the YKYBRPTLW list, chosen from the five most recent additions in each section. Here's a sample (click reload to see a new one - your browser must support Javascript):

There's been a minor layout change since the last update and I hope it makes things easier to navigate. Totals have been added in the header of each section, as well as a link back up to the top of the page.

Anne McCaffrey has seen the site! She emailed me to say that she really enjoyed it, and to correct a small error in the disclaimer, which has been rectified.
